Choose the Right Cocktail Shaker

May 26th, 2011

Even though it may seem like a fairly simple piece of equipment, for someone who is truly interested in learning about the art of bartending, choosing the correct cocktail shaker is an important step. Browse your local stores and online stores to investigate the variety of different items available. There are both Boston shakers and traditional shakers available, and they may be made from everything from stainless steel to acrylic materials. Consider the options, and, if you’re truly interested in creating the perfect Mai Tai or Cosmo, consider purchasing a high quality (but admittedly fragile and pricy) glass cocktail shaker. All of these choices can be daunting, so don’t be intimidated by them, especially if bartending is new to you. Consider a cheaper plastic model, with which you can learn the tricks of the trade and begin to learn about the many intricacies and elements of cocktail shaking and bartending. After learning more about it, perhaps you may move to upgrade your shaker to a more expensive, better model.

Lane Tanner Winery

March 4th, 2011

The Lane Tanner Winery is led by a chemist by trade (every winery employs one, commonly referred to as encologist) named Lane Tanner which has long been known by the best wine clubs. The largest and best use of resources from the winery has come from the private label Pinot Noir which is still served to this day at the Hitching Post restaurant. As many wine drinkers will remember, the Hitching Post restaurant was made extremely famous in the movie Sideways. Production is currently sitting at about two thousand cases of wine per year spread almost evenly across three different Pinot Noir offerings and finally a cool weather Syrah. Balance is the key here, almost to a fault from time to time. Lane Tanner has been accused of making thin and unfulfilling efforts at times, which tends to turn off the current batch of wine critics. These are wines made though in her style each and every year, there are times when she hits it perfect and the wines are scored in the mid 90 point range.
