OEDIPUS REDUX
What exactly is Oedipus’ dilemma? According to the Greek play, Oedipus was sent away as a child by his father Laius because of a prophecy that he would kill his father and marry his own mother. But fate conspired to send Oedipus running away from his adoptive parents for fear of the prophecy being fulfilled – straight into his own father, Laius, at the crossroads of Delphi, Thebes and Daulis. His unwitting murder of Laius was, in a sense, Oedipus’ sin – his subsequent incest was the punishment for this sin.
